Francesca Sorbara is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Anthropology, housed in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences. After living in different countries across South America, Sorbara came to Carolina to pursue a graduate degree. She is the 2022 recipient of the Coffield Family Summer Research Fellowship, which has allowed her to resume field work after COVID-19 placed a pause on her research.

Lily Herbert ’16 is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Geography housed in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Carolina in Geography and Global Studies. Herbert is a 2022 recipient of the Ou Family Summer Research Fellowship, which has allowed her to work on her dissertation, centering on hate crime legislation and its geographical ties.

Seh-Joo Kwon is a Ph.D. candidate within the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences. She is the recipient of the Carol and Ed Smithwick Summer Research Fellowship. With this funding, Kwon will continue to work on her dissertation, focusing on risk-taking behaviors in adolescents.

Erin Dickey (‘18 M.S., ‘18 M.A) is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Art and Art History housed in the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences. She holds two master’s degrees from Carolina in art history and information science. Dickey is the 2022 recipient of the Poulton Family Summer Research Fellowship, which allows her to travel and collect research for her dissertation on art, technology, and feminism in the 1980s.

Michelle Dromgold-Sermen is a Ph.D. candidate within the Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s College of Arts and Sciences. Dromgold-Sermen has been awarded the Peggy Totten Harpold Summer Research Fellowship. This funding will allow her to continue work on her dissertation, which investigates the pathway to legal permanent residence for temporary migrants on visas in the United States.

Courtney Chaaban ‘11 is a Ph.D. candidate within the Human Movement Science Curriculum at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill — a joint program offered by the Department of Allied Health Sciences, UNC School of Medicine, and the Department of Exercise and Sport Science within the College of Arts & Sciences. She is the recipient of the Tom and Karen Sox Summer Research Fellowship, which will allow her to continue researching adolescent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries
and treatment.

John West is a Ph.D. candidate within the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As he works to complete his dissertation — research that focuses on emotional granularity in individuals and how it shapes our memory — he has been awarded the Drs. Thomas and Sharon Watkins Summer Research Fellowship. The department is housed in the College of Arts & Sciences. He attended George Mason University, where he completed an honors thesis studying anxiety and memory.
